SEMIH BALCIOGLU PASSED AWAY


One of the doyens of modern cartoon in Turkey, Semih Balcioglu died of a heart attack in Istanbul on October 27, 2006. Born in 1928, he studied graphics and his work first appeared in 1943 in Akbaba, the famous and long-lasting Turkish humour magazine in 20th century. Turhan Selcuk, Ferit Ongoren and Balcioglu founded the Association of Cartoonists in 1969: http://www.karikaturculerdernegi.org/ He was awarded about a hundred national and international prizes and published 29 cartoon books and some volumes of his memoirs. Between 1974-1979 he was the Chairman of the Turkish Syndicate of Journalists. His funeral will take place at noontime on Monday, October 30, 2006 in Zincirlikuyu, Istanbul.
